Cold-weather training fails for two reasons: too much insulation, or too little wind protection. The layering system fixes both.
Base layer: manage moisture
A fitted, fast-wicking base keeps sweat off the skin. Wet skin in cold air is what makes you cold — insulation cannot compensate for a damp base layer.
Mid layer: trap warm air
A brushed hoodie or fleece-backed top holds a layer of warm air without bulk. This is the layer you remove first once you are warm.
Actionable tips
- Dress to feel slightly cold at the door.
- Cover extremities: most heat is lost from hands, head and ankles.
Outer layer: block wind and rain
A wind-resistant, water-repellent jacket with underarm breathability. Without it, wind strips the warm air from your mid layer within minutes.
Legs and indoor training
Brushed full-length compression leggings are enough for most conditions. Indoors, drop the shell and keep the base and mid layers for the warm-up.
Frequently asked questions
- How should I dress for a winter run?
- A wicking base, a brushed mid layer and a wind-resistant shell, with brushed full-length leggings.
- Are fleece-lined leggings good for training?
- Brushed-interior compression leggings are ideal — warm, still supportive and not bulky. Heavy fleece is better for walking than training.
- Should I feel warm before I start exercising?
- No. Dress to feel slightly cool at the door; you will warm up within ten minutes.
