What to Wear to Pilates

Pilates is a precision practice. Your instructor needs to see the line of your spine and the position of your pelvis, and the reformer needs fabric that will not slip or catch.
Fitted, not loose
Choose close-fitting leggings and a fitted crop top or long-sleeve. Loose fabric hides alignment and can catch in reformer springs and straps. A high-rise legging with a wide bonded waistband keeps everything in place through roll-downs and inversions.
Length and coverage
Full-length or 7/8 leggings are the standard because the studio is often cool and the work is slow-tempo. A fitted long-sleeve is welcome in winter; a supportive crop top is enough in summer.
Actionable tips
- Grip socks are compulsory in most studios — bring your own pair.
- Avoid zips and hardware that can scratch the reformer carriage.
- Skip loose shorts; they simply do not work on the equipment.
Fabric that stays put
Light to medium compression with excellent recovery is ideal — enough hold to smooth the line, enough give for full spinal articulation. Avoid anything that becomes sheer at full stretch, as pilates involves a great deal of forward folding.
Arrive and leave warm
Studios run cool at the start. A soft hoodie or light jacket over the set covers the arrival and the walk home, and pairs cleanly with the rest of the outfit.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you wear baggy clothes to pilates?
- It is discouraged. Loose clothing hides alignment from your instructor and can catch in reformer straps and springs.
- Do I need special socks for pilates?
- Most studios require grip socks for hygiene and safety on the reformer and mat.
- Are shorts okay for pilates?
- Fitted shorts are fine for mat work, but leggings are preferable on the reformer for comfort and coverage.
