Activewear fails in predictable ways: pilling at the inner thigh, a waistband that loses tension, colour that goes flat. Almost all of it is preventable.
Buy for durability at the point of purchase
Durability is decided before you own the garment. High yarn density, flatlock seams, a gusseted crotch and a bonded or double-layer waistband are the markers that separate pieces that last years from pieces that last a season.
Wash cool, wash inside out, wash less
Heat is the enemy of elastane. Wash at 30°C or below, inside out, on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Skip fabric softener entirely — it coats technical fibres and destroys moisture management. Wash sets with other smooth fabrics, never with towels or anything with a zip or velcro.

- Rinse sweat out in cold water immediately after training if you cannot wash straight away.
- Use a mesh bag for crop tops and anything with delicate straps.
- Never leave damp activewear in a closed gym bag.
Never tumble dry
Tumble drying is the single fastest way to ruin compression. Hang or lay flat in shade; technical knits dry quickly by design. Direct sun fades colour, so dry indoors or out of the light.
Store folded, rotate often
Fold rather than hang — hanging stretches the waistband over time. Rotating between three pairs rather than wearing one favourite constantly gives the elastane time to recover and multiplies the effective lifespan of all three.

- After every training session. Sweat degrades elastane if it is left to dry in the fabric.
- Why do my leggings pill between the thighs?
- Friction plus low yarn density. A denser interlock knit and washing inside out on a cool cycle dramatically reduce it.
- Can I tumble dry activewear on low?
- Better not to. Even low heat degrades elastane over time and shortens the life of compression.
